Futuremark Launches Value for Performance Shopping

Posted by: shaun [?] on January 24, 2008 at 11:44 pm

New service empowers users with unique purchasing information – price vs. performance statistics for processors and graphics cards.

Espoo, Finland - January 24, 2008 - Futuremark Corporation, www.futuremark.com, announced today the full release of the "Price and Performance Information Page" on YouGamers.com. This new Futuremark service takes the guesswork out of buying your next processor or graphics card. "Users often ask the question, 'how fast can my system go for my hard earned dollars?", said Matti Kontu, VP of Futuremark. "Now Futuremark answers that question."

What makes the service unique is the amount of real-world data used to calculate the system performance. Futuremark currently receives over 20,000 benchmark results from 3DMark06 each day which provide real-life performance statistics contributing to a more accurate service for the informed shopper. This data from the 3DMark06 scores is matched with retail prices from CNET Shopper and is used to calculate relative performance from over 120 processors and graphic cards to help consumers make better purchasing decisions. The service is available free for anyone at: http://www.yougamers.com/hardware/stats/3dmark06/priceandperformance/

Determinance Wins Innovation Award

Posted by: shaun [?] on January 9, 2008 at 11:35 am

Oxford, UK January 9th 2008

---

Mode 7 Games, a small independent development studio based in Oxford in the UK, is literally exploding with joy over being awarded Gametunnel's

2007 Game of the Year Innovation Award for Determinance.

"Gametunnel are one small, glorious corner of the indie scene who haven't called us rude names and posted inflammatory comments about our flying characters on internet forums," says Paul Taylor, Mode 7's strangely embittered Joint Managing Director. "For that reason alone, they deserve the attention that their attempt to associate themselves with us will garner."

"Innovation is pretty much the soul of 'indie', so winning an award for it is a big deal, " adds Ian Hardingham, Mode 7's founder. "Getting some recognition feels good."

To celebrate the award, Mode 7 are announcing today that they will be partnering with Game Du Jour to offer a 50% discount on the game for one day: January 17th 2008.

To get your half-price copy, just head over to http://www.gamedujour.com on January 17th - it couldn't be easier.

What is All this Nonsense About?

Determinance is a cult PC multiplayer sword-fighting title boasting full analogue mouse control and disturbingly camp voice-acting. Since its internet release in early 2007, it has gone on to secure a full worldwide retail deal with the publisher Lexicon Entertainment (http://www.lexiconentertainment.com).

Depths of Peril

Posted by: shaun [?] on November 12, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I recently got my hands on a copy of Depths of Peril and I must say, for an indie game made primarily by less than a handful of people, it seems to be a very good game.  Here are some screenshots to hold you over until we get finished reviewing the game.

As you can see, it's a diabloesque game -- but before you think, "oh, not that again..."   I must say, it seems to have a good backstory and lore, and it's very refreshing to see a new game in this genre that isn't a mindless clone.

Rhapsody Price Increase Looming

Posted by: shaun [?] on April 4, 2007 at 8:28 pm

As a Rhapsody subscriber for nearly two years now, I was suprised to find out that Rhapsody is raising it's montly fee.  I'll admit that the service has some awesome features, and a damn good music library, but I find it amusing to raise the price of a service that, at least in my opinion, is fairly unreliable.

Ultimately, in terms of competetive pricing, sure, as the article I linked to says, that's about on par with services like XM and Sirius Satellite radio.  But the difference is, those services work, they don't crash, lag, or randomly not work for extended periods.  So hopefully with this price increase comes increased reliability and music catalog.

If you're too lazy to look, the details are as follows (per the email I was sent):

We are increasing the Rhapsody Unlimited monthly price from $9.99 to $12.99. This change will go into effect during your next billing cycle after May 3rd, 2007. It is the first time in six years that we've increased the price of Rhapsody.

However, if you switch to yearly billing now you can keep your existing membership rate of $9.99 per month. Under a yearly subscription, you will be billed $119.88 once a year - a savings of $36 over the new monthly rate.

What a deal.  Give us $120 and you don't have to pay more per month... No thanks.  I'll stick with $2 more per month until I see whether or not you actually improve your service with this influx of money.

Just my $0.02.

Futuremark Launches YouGamers, World’s First Intelligent Gamer Website

Posted by: shaun [?] on March 7, 2007 at 8:28 am

Game Developers Conference 2007, San Francisco California – March 7, 2007 Futuremark Corporation, developers of 3DMark, the worldwide standard in advanced 3D game performance benchmarking went live today with the beta version of YouGamers™, the World’s First Intelligent Gamer Website. YouGamers (www.YouGamers.com) is a new destination site for PC gamers offering original game content, previews, gaming industry news, exclusive interviews, and full game reviews.

YouGamers initially launches with an English website, with localized language options in the future. In Version 1.0, YouGamers will provide a full gamer community with forums and blogs, offering users’ homepages, personal profiles, game lists, and game hardware details.

YouGamers’ proprietary Game-o-meter™ gaming performance analysis service is the first of its kind in gaming websites. The free service is based on Futuremark’s comprehensive database of over 13 million real world benchmark results. On request, the service scans users PC, and then estimates the system’s gaming performance, providing the gamer with an accurate assessment as to how well their PC measures up on every game in the YouGamers’ database.

The game database contains approximately 100 top PC titles at launch, with ESRB ratings and publishers’ system requirements. The website also offers an easy to use, integrated comparison shopping service with direct shopping links for all games and recommended hardware. Users will also be able to categorize the site’s information by tagging, a Web 2.0 feature.

YouGamers’ Editor-in-Chief Nick Evanson heads up the professional content team. Reviews include editors’ game-play ratings with system and hardware recommendations to provide a truly enjoyable gaming experience. Produced by playing each game on various PC configurations, from entry level systems to a high performance gaming PCs, game reviews provide a professional estimation of the real-world system requirements for game-play. Combining subjective game-play reviews with objective performance data from the Game-o-meter™ service, YouGamers’ users will be able to predict their actual game experience in advance.

“YouGamers is a complete web resource for gamers that offers a full range of game information and an active community, but with an intelligent twist. Every gamer website up to this point has only provided a piece of the puzzle, largely ignoring the relationship between PC hardware and game-play,” said Tero Sarkkinen, EVP Sales and Marketing of Futuremark Corporation. “We’ll provide the regular news, reviews, links, content and forums, but YouGamers is smarter than that. Aside from serving the enthusiast gamer with detailed gaming performance analysis, we also help all gamers by telling them which games their PC can play well, before they actually buy one. We also give reliable upgrade and new PC purchase advice for an even better enjoyment of gaming. YouGamers is going to change what gamers expect from game websites.”
